Arts and Sciences Championship
Rules and Regulations for the Shire of Granite Mountain
Rules for Entry:
1. The Shire of Granite Mountain's Arts and Science Championship competition shall be held annually during our May event.
2. Each entrant must promise to uphold the rules of the competition and each judge must promise to judge honorably and fairly.
3. All entries must be received by the Shire Minister of Arts and Science by noon of the day of competition and will be released after closing court that evening. Dispensations of leftover food items are at the discretion of the entrant.
4. Non members are allowed to enter only one item into the competition in order for their work to be seen by all and for them to get positive feedback on their work from the judges.
5. In order to be eligible for the title of Champion, the entrant must show current proof of membership for the Society for Creative Anachronisms, have a ZIP code claimed by the Shire of Granite Mountain, and be an active participant within the Shire (attending at least three meetings in the last calendar year).
6. Each entrant who is a member is allowed a maximum of seven entries consisting of completed work. Unfinished work or kits need not apply, but items created from commercial patterns or recipes are acceptable if shown to be authentic within the period of history from 650 to 1650 A.D.
7. To compete for the title of champion, the entrant must enter a minimum of three and a maximum of seven items in at least two different categories. They must also declare their intent to compete for Shire Champion when registering for the competition.
8. Each entry must include brief documentation, which includes a general description, methods of construction, and information relating to its authenticity and use. Those who need assistance in documentation please contact the Shire Minister of Arts and Science at least one week before the competition.
9. Anonymity shall be preserved with each item entered as far is practical. Therefore you will be given an entry number to affix to your item and documentation and should not write your name anywhere within your documentation.
10. One dual entry is allowed and will receive points for each category provided the entry consists of two different art forms, i.e., an early period men's tunic with a distinctive heraldic display.
11. No item may be entered which has been entered into a previous Shire Championship. Items that have been entered in other Kingdom competitions should have additional elements, such as more detailed documentation, more elaborate decorations, etc. If an entry is suspected to be a duplicate and the entrant cannot show noticeable improvement or changes it may be removed by a joint decision between the Shire Minister of Arts and Science and the Shire Seneschal.
12. Any entrant may bring items for display only that will not be judged or considered for competition. These displays should be labeled as to what it is and who made it so that the public may learn more about the arts and sciences in the Middle Ages and Renaissance.
Competition, Judging, and Champion:
1. The categories for this Arts and Science competition shall be selected by populous vote as far in advance of the competition as possible. The categories are drawn mainly from the Kingdom of Atenveldt's competition guidelines, but the Shire Minister of Arts and Science may combine categories in order to better serve the needs of the Shire.
2. The Shire Minister of Arts and Science shall work closely with the Autocrat for the event as well as the Feastocrat if there is a cooking category. This will allow for all parties to make sure that the total needs of the populace are being met and no one gets left out of the decision making process.
3. The Shire Minister of Arts and Science shall select the judges prior to the competition. Judges may, should the need arise, be chosen from the populace in attendance who have expertise in the category.
4. There shall be three judges for each category: one member of the Shire not entering but well versed in the specific category, one expert in the category from outside the Shire (preferably a peer of the realm), and one other judge selected by the Shire Minister of Arts and Science. (MODIFIED IN 2003)
5. All three judges shall judge on their own scoring sheet, and the three sheets shall be averaged together for a final score. The final scores for all Championship entries shall be averaged together so that an entrant cannot gain a numeric advantage over another simply by entering more items.
6. The Championship entrant with the highest averages wins. In the event of a tie the Champion shall be determined by a joint decision between the Shire Minister of Arts and Science, the judges, and the highest ranking peer present at the event. These gentles' decision shall be final.
7. The Shire Minister of Arts and Science is responsible for publishing the names of the winners and their achievements in the National Squire as well as the Southwind as space allows.
8. The Shire Minister of Arts and Science will be responsible for commissioning a scroll for the Champion as well as a smaller scroll and appropriate prize for each Lord or Lady of the category winners. The Shire Champion shall also be recognized by receiving the necklace for their office to wear until the next competition. If they need to permanently leave the Shire for any reason they must relinquish the necklace to the Minister of Arts and Science for safekeeping until the next championship.
9. The Champion's responsibilities to their office for the next year shall be to represent the Shire of Granite Mountain as it's official Champion of the Arts and Sciences. This can include but is not limited to teaching the Shire one of the skills that they have demonstrated excellence in, writing an article for the Shire newsletter regarding the Arts and Sciences, or creating additional regalia for the Shire.
10. Lords and Ladies of each category shall work to aid the Shire Champion in promoting and enhancing Arts and Sciences within our Shire.
