What is a Persona?
When you spend a little time around the SCA, you will start to hear about something called Persona. This is what we call the imaginary biography each of us creates for him or her self. One may pick an era, a geoghraphic location, an economic and social station, a skill, trade or profession, etc. For example you might decide that you would like to be an Irish Priest from the 12th century who is skilled in music and calligraphy or a Norman Noble woman who is cousin to Royalty and the widow of a Knight. One may have a lot of fun creating this fantasy Persona for oneself!
Do I have to choose a Persona now?
Absolutely not, in fact, it is usually preferable to spend some time researching, talking to others in the group and observing the different types of Personae available before you choose. Most people put quite a bit of effort into developing their Persona's accoutrements and it would be a shame to find you had changed your mind after all of that work. On the other hand, if you don't mind the extra work involved, there is nothing illegal about trying out several different Personae to find the right fit for you. Most people tend to bide their time until it becomes obvious to them "who" they wish to portray in the Society.
How can I research a Persona?
This site contains many links to research sites. In addition, your local library can provide tons of historical reference material to help in your search. (hint, Discover the wonders of Inter Library Loans!) Just talking to your fellow members can often provide a wealth of information. If you run into someone whose Persona is of interest to you don't be afraid to go up and talk to them, chances are excellent that they will be able to steer you to some terriffic resources. Check some of the Links below.
What do I do when I decide on a Persona?
That's when the fun begins! Now you start planning your wardrobe, your device, your name, even how your camp will look.. Check the other pages in this site for help with all of these, and remember your fellow members are more than happy to help.
What are some possibilites for Personas?
The list is very long, maybe limitless. You might choose to be an Eleventh century landholder from Ireland, a Merchant traveling in Marco Polo's footsteps, A professor at the fledgling College of Oxford, a lady in waiting to Queen Elizabeth, a privateer sailing and capturing bounty for the "virgin" Queen, a Mongol warrior, a Japanese samurai, an Italian Nobleman in 14th century Venice, a Viking warrior. You are limited to real times, places and walks of life,(elf ears and faerie wings are not encouraged) but beyond that, your imagination is your only limit)
What if I never wish to choose a Persona?
If you never find anything that seems right for you, and just want to continue playing as a "generic" character that is perfectly all right. This game is fun, flexible and big enough to include myriad different people with different outlooks.
